Olivier Giroud made French football history, becoming the nation’s all-time leading scorer as he netted against Poland in the World Cup.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker put Les Bleus ahead on the stroke of half time of the Round of 16 clash, collecting Kylian Mbappe’s through ball on the inside before striking it past the onrushing Wojciech Szczesny.
It means Giroud now has 52 goals for France, putting him ahead of previous record holder, Thierry Henry.
“Giroud’s a fantastic player, he’s underrated,” former England international Lianne Sanderson said on commentary for talkSPORT 2. “He always scores… his one-touch play is really good.
“The top, top players pick their moments and he’s got his goal even though he didn’t strike it very truly.”
“I was surprised when Arsenal just let Giroud move to Chelsea… whenever he’s gone anywhere he’s always scored important goals,” Sanderson later added.
Giroud went into the tournament on 49 goals for his country but his brace against Australia put him level with Henry.
The strike set the French on their way to a easy win with Mbappe, who may well break Giroud’s record in the future, scoring twice in a virtuoso second-half display.
