Spain impressed in their first two games of this year’s tournament, picking up four points from their opening two games with a very healthy goal difference that enabled Luis Enrique to make five changes for the final game against Japan.
Striker Alvaro Morata is in joint-second in the race for the Golden Boot having bagged himself three goals, with Dani Olmo also on the score sheet once and having a standout tournament.
Sofyan Amrabat has impressed in the heart of the midfield for Morocco, though has conceded the most fouls out of anyone for the Atlas Lions and is just one booking away from missing his next match.
Morocco shocked the world by finishing top of a group that contained the likes of Belgium and Croatia, winning two and drawing one of their three group stage matches.
The African side kicked off with a goalless draw against Croatia, then comfortably beat 2018 semi finalists Belgium 2-0, before securing top spot in Group F with a 2-1 win over Canada.
This is just the second time Morocco have reached the knockout stages of the World Cup, the previous time coming back in 1986.
Spain got their 2022 tournament off to the perfect start with a thumping 7-0 victory over Costa Rica, before drawing 1-1 with four time world champions Germany.
A surprise 2-1 defeat to Japan in the final group match cost the 2010 winners a first place finish in the group but not a spot in the knockout stages.
The two countries are separated by just eight miles at their closest point across the Mediterranean Sea, but have met on the football pitch just three times in their history and just once since 1961.
That came in the last World Cup in Russia in 2018, when a 93rd minute Iago Aspas equaliser salvaged Spain a point in a 2-2 draw in Kaliningrad.
The winner of Tuesday’s match will play Portugal or Switzerland in the quarter final.
