Both teams came through unscathed from last 16 matches they were both heavy favourites for.
Netherlands saw off USA 3-1 thanks to goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries to book their place in the last eight, while goals from Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez gave Argentina a 2-1 win over Australia.
Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands side reached the last 16 having finished top of Group A with wins over Senegal and hosts Qatar sandwiching a 1-1 draw with Ecuador.
Argentina were on the receiving end of one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history in their first match of the tournament, as Saudi Arabia came from a goal down to defeat the South American champions 2-1.
Lionel Scaloni’s side both of their other two matches however to ensure they topped Group C, beating Mexico and Poland both by 2-0 scorelines.
Netherlands lead the head to head between the two sides 4-3 across their nine matches.
The last time the two nations met came in the semi finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with the two World Cup winners from South America progressing on penalties after a goalless draw, before losing to Germany in the final.
