Portugal were one of just three teams to have secured their spot in the knockout stage of the Qatar World Cup with a match to spare, having won their opening two matches of the tournament.
The side beat Ghana 3-2 in their opening match, and went on to defeat Uruguay 2-0 to book their last 16 spot, enabling the former European champions to make six changes for their final group game, a 2-1 defeat to South Korea.
A Selecao still topped the group despite the defeat to book themselves a tie against Switzerland, who finished as runners up in Group G.
Murat Yakin’s side have now reached the knockout stage in four of the last five World Cups, but haven’t reached the quarter final since they hosted the tournament back in 1954.
The Swiss beat Cameroon 1-0 in their opener against Cameroon, before losing by the same scoreline to Brazil, which set up a winner takes all clash in the final match against Serbia, in which Switzerland prevailed as 3-2 winners.
Portugal have won three of the last four meetings between the two sides, who have met twice already this year in the Nations League, with each team winning once, most recently a 1-0 home win for Switzerland.
The winner of Tuesday night’s clash will take on the winner of Tuesday afternoon’s last 16 match between Morocco and Spain.
