Louis van Gaal hilariously dances with phone in hand as Netherlands given warm welcome after reaching World Cup quarter-final

Louis van Gaal was in a party mood as the Netherlands booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

His team put in a strong performance to beat USA 3-1 and were the first side to reach the last-eight.

The Netherlands were given a warm welcome back at their hotel in Qatar and Van Gaal was dancing along, with his phone out recording everything.

Lots of the Dutch players had their phones out recording what was happening, with Virgil van Dijk even having a cardboard cutout of his own face.

You never quite know what you are going to get from former Manchester United manager Van Gaal, who seems to be enjoying himself at the World Cup.

He planted a kiss on Denzel Dumfries’ cheek in their post-match press conference after the Inter Milan defender scored one and got two assists.

“Yesterday or the day before yesterday I gave him a big, fat kiss and I’m going to give him another big, fat kiss,” said Van Gaal before leaning over and giving Dumfries a peck on the cheek.

The 71-year-old was still critical of his team, though, even though they reached the next stages of the knockouts.

“I was very critical at half-time in my analysis that I share with my players,” said Van Gaal. “Although we were in the lead 2-0, I think they were fantastic goals with beauty and team spirit.

“However, in the first half we were dispossessed so much and it was not necessary. That’s simply not acceptable at a World Cup. If you play top-notch countries, you simply can’t make those mistakes.

“In the second half they did a much better job I think even though we scored fewer goals. Nonetheless we were all very, very pleased and it gives us incredible confidence.

“I think we have big chances here. We still have three matches to go. I’ve been talking about this for a year that we can become world champions.”
