‘Very proud’ – Sadio Mane sends emotional message to Senegal teammates after World Cup defeat to England

Sadio Mane has posted an emotional message to his fellow Senegal internationals after they were knocked out of the World Cup by England.

The Bayern Munich winger was unable to feature at the tournament as a result of injury, but has still shown his support for his teammates as they crashed out in the Round of 16.

Senegal finished second in their group behind the Netherlands and therefore set up with a knockout clash against England.

However despite their efforts, they were unable to overcome Gareth Southgate’s side and lost 3-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Shortly after the defeat, Mane took to Instagram to send his commiserations: “Dear brothers, you have fallen into arms.

“The people are very proud of your journey and you have put the balm in the hearts of Senegalese and all supporters by defending the national flag with dignity.

“Continue learning and good luck. We will go in search of more Trophies Inshallah.”

No one truly knows how the African Cup of Nations holders would have performed with Mane in the side, but he was certainly a big miss for them in Qatar given he scored 34 goals in 93 games for his nation.

For England on the other hand, it was another night of quality as their young stars shined once again.

Jude Bellingham provided the assist for Jordan Henderson’s opening goal of the game, before Phil Foden set up Harry Kane for the second.

Bukayo Saka soon scored England’s third of the night as they went on to comfortably beat Senegal, with the Three Lions now on 12 goals for the tournament.

Next up for them is a quarter-final clash against France on Saturday evening, with both sides emerging as two of the favourites to go all the way in Qatar.
